A Prayer for the National Election

Posted by Bishop Ken Carter on October 23, 2012.

Almighty and gracious God:

You are the source of every blessing,
The judge of every nation
And the hope of earth and heaven:

We pray to you on the eve of this important national election.

Call to mind the best that is within us:

That we live under God
That we are indivisible,
That out of many, we are one,
That liberty and justice extend to all.

We acknowledge the sin that runs through our history as a nation:
The displacement of native peoples,
the disregard for life,
racial injustice,
economic inequity,
regional separation.

And yet we profess a deep and abiding gratitude
for the goodness of ordinary people who have made sacrifices,
who have sought opportunities,
who have journeyed to this land as immigrants
and strengthened its promise in successive generations,
who have found freedom on these shores,
and defended this freedom at tremendous cost.

Be with us in the days that are near.
Remind us that your ways are not our ways,
that your power and might transcend every nation,
that you are not mocked.

Let those who follow your Son Jesus Christ be a peaceable people
in the midst of division.
Give us a passion for peace, justice and freedom
that breaks down walls of political partisanship.

Grant us wisdom,
grant us courage
for the facing of this hour
and the living of these days.

Amen.

Thank you for a prayer that transcends political parties and asks for wisdom for all. Thank you for reminding us that our ways are not God's ways and that He always has a better plan. Thank you for reminding me that we are where God wants us whether that's a comfortable place or not. All glory to God the Father.

This prayer is a great way to pray for God's wisdom and to trust in his answer/plan. This prayer is about peace and unity for our nation. I pray all can come to that after the election putting self aside and focus outside self for the benefit of all, to the glory of God.

Thank you for taking time to articulate this graceful prayer for our use in the midst of this uncivil time.

Excellent prayer. It'd be nice if there were a "share" button for the social media networks.

Thank you for this gracious prayer for the church. It is exactly what all of us may say to God in every place we gather, and believing, we may claim victory --only as we get off our knees and give work expression to the faith of our prayer. Thanks!

Thank you so much for that excellent prayer, I am sure God turns his face through this Nation and God will continue to walk with the American Government to give all the members wisdom in their decision.
